Weather and Fishing: What Is the Effect of Weather on Fishing

Amateur fishing is common in all countries. It has reached a very high level, especially in the United States. Every year 18 million people obtain a license to fish for recreational purposes. In addition, the number of unlicensed hunters exceeds 10 million. It is very popular in Canada and European countries and in the far east. One of the biggest factors that a fisherman should pay attention to before going hunting is the weather. Are you wondering why?

At certain times of the year or when the weather is shaped according to certain factors, it may be the most suitable time for fishing. The fishing status may differ according to the wind, air pressure, sun, and rain conditions. But the most important factor for the fish to attack its prey is the water temperature. Changes in water temperatures can cause large drops for the catch. When the water is cold, it is time to wait for fishing. Sudden warming or sudden cooling is the most inefficient situation for fishing. However, the gradually warming water starts to show the best effect for hunting. Although the catch rate is not very high, the rate at which the fish attack the food increases significantly.

Apart from the water temperature, the appearance and color of the water are also very important. The hunts that are clean and transparent also have a higher chance of hunting. In addition, breaks above the water caused by a gentle wind increase the attractiveness of fake baits and fishing efficiency. The fishing potential is low in blurry and unclean game areas. A sudden drop or sudden rise in water level reduces fishing efficiency due to the change it will make in fish beds. Hunting grounds with high water levels always produce better results for trophy hunting. Low water levels increase the chances of making normal-sized hunts. Fish do not like sudden height changes in water reservoirs, and unproductive catch occurs for a few days.

The atmospheric pressure on Earth affects fishing a lot. If the barometer shows perfect weather, the probability of fishing will be lower. If the weather between storm and rain is expected, this will reduce the efficiency. It is the best time for a good fishing barometer to point between rain and fresh air. The highest fish catch rate is in the air. If there is a sharp drop in air pressure, then it is time to collect the supplies and return home. Very strong windy weather is not very suitable for fishing as well as the change of direction of the wind. The most suitable wind is when there is a very light breeze. The hours when the sun is at the peak are not very favorable. Early morning and evening are the best hours for fishing.

The Relationship Between Weather and Fishing Efficiency

Fish are sensitive to pressure changes in the water. For this reason, they are affected by changes in atmospheric pressure up to a certain depth (at least 40-50 m). This affects several parameters. The pressure change is directly reflected on the fish and indirectly affects the fish with factors such as the amount of oxygen in the water, water temperature, etc. In this case, the first problem, in general, is this. As the pressure changes, the fish have to adapt to the new situation. This reduces the efficiency of fishing.

This is the time it takes for the air to settle. Once the pressure is stabilized, the fish begin to behave according to the new pressure situation in a relatively short time. But it is certain that the fish want to eat something even if the pressure is high and low. Lack of yield means that the fish is looking for something different. In short, the same feeds do not show the same yield in the same place in both high and low pressure. Although pressure is an important factor, generally pressure change means air change, it means rain, it means sun, it means cloud. And these mean different light conditions etc. In short, the fish slack off as the weather changes. But after the weather changes and sits down, the fish returns to normal.

Basically, according to the weather, the pressure can be determined as follows. The clearer the weather, the lower the wind, the higher the pressure. High or low pressure affects the fishing potential of fish, especially in lakes. The clear blue sky means high pressure in general, perch and carp go deep, the crane does not care much, it stays in place. After all, while hunting less in such weather, fish like carp whose prey decreases and its hunger reaches the peak becomes more aggressive and gives better prey.

However, it is not possible to say the same things about the sea. First of all, there are fish living in the sea, regardless of the weather. For example, swords or garfish always live close to the water, because sardines and silvers, etc. are on the water. But horse mackerel, tuna, and bonito can be at the bottom or above the water. From this point of view, if the weather is like this, it is not possible to say that fish would be at a certain point for the sea. Generally, the rule of thumb does not change very much: As the weather changes, the fish slack off. So the weather has changed, what will we do after this moment?

  • Sparkling sky and high pressure

Fishing becomes more difficult. Fish will be in a shelter (with large rocks at the seabed) and in deep waters. But they actually go there to hide. More effective baits are required to catch. Your bait should move slowly (if you are doing throw-pull, etc.), of course, it should be a quality thing that will give good action in slow motion. The best is the devil fishing rod, which sinks slowly, but remember, you will use it in deep water, not from the pier, it may run out of life until you reach the bottom. One way is to use slow-sinking baits is to use plummet. Find deep and/or sheltered places in the sea. Use such baits around here. Or wait for the pressure to drop.

  • The air is clear, the clouds are moving away

This shows up at the very first moment. The air is changing, the pressure is rising. Fish say what are we going, best to watch the sea and the view. But be ready, the fish are coming out from deep slowly. In the meantime, especially if the change is swift, brightly colored baits, needles, glitter, etc. can bring good surprises, especially if you try it near the cliffs. But you have to look for the fish deep again. The middle water and bottom parts of deep places can give good results.

  • Few clouds and clear weather

This is neither very good for fishing, nor shows a very bad situation. It is possible to catch fish. You can try your classic baits in classic places. So many extra super baits etc. are not necessary.

  • Cloudy weather

It is necessary to understand this situation a little bit first. This means there’s no new storm, noise, etc. and the weather is calmly closing. This basically refers to the slowly falling pressure. The fish are then extremely active. They attack very well especially to live baits. Fake bait does not do much in this weather. Only very quality feeds will help. Especially in the appropriate season, when the waters are hot, very efficient catches can be made, especially from close to the water and from the shore.

  • Overcast weather

A gloomy air. Clouds covered the sky like that, neither raining nor wind. In this weather, fish are generally in the shallows. They do not prefer the deep. This means they will be close to the shore. Many species become aggressive. Dark-colored baits and hooks should be preferred. Fish yield increases especially where there are rocks in the sea. Don’t look too deep. If you are doing throw and pull, do not pull the bait too fast.

  • Thunderstorms and torrential rain

This weather means very low pressure that fish almost retreat. They go and play a baseball match in the deep. Free bait sets will be very attractive to fish in this weather. Try your luck by throwing bait tackles in deep places, you usually don’t go back empty. When I say deep, don’t look for deep places, just check out the deep holes in that area, etc. This is information that generally fits the behavior of fish in the sea. But the issue cannot be summed up by pressure alone. If the weather is overcast, keep your baits in dark colors. Fast movement should generally be avoided.

In general, if the weather is bad for you, it is bad for the fish. When the weather is bad, you sit at home and watch TV, and they go deep or in sheltered places. In extreme situations where there is very, very clear and strong wind/rain, especially when pressures close to the ends of the barometer are read, fishing is difficult, it is not easy. However, in such cases, certain areas, which are both deep and protected areas without flow, can be extremely efficient. However, such places are limited.

If the weather is both clear and windy, look for the storm in the sea. A thunderstorm in the sea is not a rain shower. They are the colored regions that determine the places with and without wind. If the weather is clear, there is no wind, if you find a large area with heavy rainfall (windy), this area may be a good place for hunting, sometimes.

Hopefully, this information will help give some idea of what weather and where to go hunting. The best thing is to follow the pressure, weather, and pastures according to the season. This information was compiled primarily from my own experiences. Others may think differently. Yet, even though this is the most accurate guess, it will only be able to provide us with the general framework.

Choosing the Fishing Place Considering Weather

Regardless of the condition of the weather, the main thing in fishing is the condition of the hunting area. For example, let’s assume that the air is blowing 4-6 knots of the north. The effect of this wind will differ for each pasture. The strong hitting of the waves on the rocks drops the natural baits in the cavities into the water, while the foam leaves the fish up to the surface near the water. In some seas, fishermen can hunt many fish species with single-hook no-sinker gear. But there are two very important points. Winds do not have the same effect on every pasture and experience is very important in these works.

In addition, it should be noted. When you go to the Hunting Ground, the calmer the water, the less fish will be. The more turbulent it is, the more efficient it is. Everything, as we have always said, is that the baits that are normally well stored attract the fish by coming out with the activity in the sea. For this reason, it is a fact that some pastures do good fish when the wind is northeaster, but it is just as true when another pasture does work when it is southwester.

Finally, let’s explain the truth of the saying “the yield increases after rain”. As is known, most fish species love the smell of soil. First of all, we can count fish such as Gray Mullet, Sea Bass, Mendole, and Two-Banded Sea Bream. For this reason, after heavy rain, in some areas, water mixes with the soil into the sea. Thus, creatures that come to the sea from the land with the soil cannot avoid being food for fish. Fishermen who have experienced this over and over have brought this phrase to the agenda. Of course, as we said at the beginning, it is determined by the location of the pasture.

There are situations where many more hunts can be made by using natural conditions in the seas. As we mentioned at the beginning of the subject, these are cases occurring due to the collision of currents with reverse currents, the mobility created by intense currents in underwater rocks, underground leaks, etc. Since these are the topics of another article, we did not find it necessary to explain them here. In the light of the information we provide here if you go in the right direction, we are sure that your fishing will be that fertile.

The Effect of Wind on Fishing

An amateur fisherman (whether fishing by the pier or from the boat) must understand the weather. Sometimes the sea, which seems very calm on the shores, is turned upside down by waves when it comes out. Sometimes when the sea is still on the coast and offshore, a gust of explosion suddenly capsizes boats. An oarsman who does not know the direction of the currents cannot easily exit after entering that current. Therefore, the amateur fisherman has to know the winds, waters, and directions.

The wind is the movement of mass in the horizontal direction, displacing air from a high-pressure area to a low-pressure area. As a result of this movement, the events at sea concern the fisherman rather than the events on land. According to the directions, names, and intensity of the winds, it can be predicted how the weather and the sea will be. By taking advantage of this and evaluating past observations, the science called climatology made more or less accurate weather forecasts and made “Forecast Calendars”. Amateur fishermen, by learning the winds and their characteristics, understand the periods when the sea is safe and when they can hunt safely.

When we look at a compass in front of us, we see that it consists of four main directions. The top of the compass lying horizontally on the ground points north. Practically, for a person who takes the sun’s rising direction to his left, the right side points to the west, directly opposite the south, and back to the north. The winds are called 12 according to their intensity. These are Calm, very light, light, pleasant, mild, fresh, strong, medium storm, storm, strong storm, big storm, gust, and hurricane. Hurricane is also known by the name of cyclone or typhoon.

The strength of the winds is measured in kilometers per hour. Sailors call winds that blow faster than 50 kilometers per hour storms. Hurricane is the strongest of the winds. It is a type of wind that can be seen in many open seas of the world. It is mostly seen in the oceans and parts of the USA and Japan. It causes great disasters both at sea and on land. It breaks down buildings, moves the seas, uproots trees. The speed of the winds is measured by an instrument called an anemometer that measures the velocity of the air relative to the ground.

It is possible to understand the type of winds by looking at the shape of the waves in the sea, smoke, tree leaves and branches, power poles and wires, roof tiles, and chimneys. In the kind of wind called calm, there is almost no breeze, the smoke rises upright, the leaves do not move. In the very light wind, the smoke becomes less inclined, the leaves move from time to time. In the light wind, the leaves begin to move constantly and the waters in the sea begin to move. In the mild wind, the leaves are constantly swaying and ripples are formed in the sea. In the medium wind, tree branches begin to sway, ripples turn into small waves.

On the fresh breeze, the fumes become horizontal, flags flap continuously, tree branches waving from time to time. In the strong wind, the speed of the wind increases to 35-40 km per hour, large waves occur, the wires of the electric poles swing and hum. In a medium storm, the speed reaches 50 km / h and a real storm occurs. Trees swing, it becomes difficult to steer a boat, and it is difficult to stand. During the storm, the speed reaches 60-70 km, the trees are constantly swaying and small branches are broken. In the strong storm, the big branches of the tree also break, power poles swing, wires break, the tiles and chimneys of the buildings fly.

In a big storm, the speed goes above 100 km. Small trees can be uprooted, roofs fly off, walking becomes impossible, boats capsize in the sea, big waves come to life. In a gust, the speed rises to 120 km, major damage occurs in the houses, drips, roofs fly, even large trees are uprooted, it becomes impossible to stay in the sea. In a hurricane, there is no limit to speed; It rises above 120 km, can rest neither on the sea nor on the land, a real disaster begins, it sinks large ships, demolishes buildings from the foundations, and the enormous waves that occur destroy the residential areas on the coastline.

The Effect of Weather on Fisherman

The first thing a fisherman looks at should be the weather. Whether you hunt from the shore or by boat, the weather is the most important issue. If there is a risk of precipitation, you should bring a raincoat, boots, and hat with you. I strongly recommend that you do not go fishing in the weather with the risk of heavy rain and lightning. If you say I will go, it is important for your safety to choose non-carbon straws. For example, if you are going to hunt on the coast, when you see the weather blowing from the east, you will have to make the choice of pasture in this context. Because a nose that cuts the eastern air, hunting in the west direction will remind the fish that survived the current and the wave of their stomach’s hunger and will allow them to be caught more comfortably on that pasture.

Make your fish plans according to the weather! You have decided to go fishing at the weekend. How will the weather be! Are you paying attention to this? Does snowfall really affect the fish? Or the rain will greet you at the weekend! The answers to these questions are important. Snowfall or very cold weather forces the fish in the migration area to migrate. Therefore, we can say that it is correct to expect fish to be reduced in winter, especially in migration areas, compared to normal weather. With the migration of species such as Bluefish and Bonito, we can expect that forage species such as small horse mackerel and silver found in other waters will relax and enter the migration zone.

Seawater temperature is very important in this respect. Although the weather gets colder, unless it cools the water too much, that is, 1-2 degrees is not very important and the current does not change, the fish will not be affected much. The harsh North and North-West winds blowing, the extreme cooling of the coastal waters may cause the fish to lie in the channels. Since the undercurrent runs from south to north, the lowest parts of the sea become the hottest regions. Then the fish waits at the bottom in the mud. This is a unique opportunity for bottom fish hunters. In windy weather, you can hunt with the bottom fishing line.

If there has not been a storm recently and there is good weather and you are thinking of coastal hunting, remember that you will generally get sea air that day. Before you go fishing, you should definitely determine which fish you want to catch. Depending on the weather, you should choose a pasture that will not leave you in a difficult situation. Do not forget that by choosing the right pasture, you will realize the most important rule in the first place. If you find a hungry fish in the pasture, all the other points you need to pay attention to may suddenly become unimportant.

When choosing pasture, being in the waters that the fish you will hunt likes will increase the efficiency. For example, if the target fish is perch, hunting in the bays, inland of the breakwaters, and in the areas where the creeks or streams flow into the sea will increase your chances of finding fish. In addition to these, finding a seafloor structure with mossy and pebble stones will be like honey on butter. When you meet these conditions, the most important issue you will pay attention to is finding a nice place to hide from the perch, which is very timid and cunning, and to hunt quietly without going into the water. These conditions are the ideal conditions for the fish.

How Weather Affects Fish Behaviour

Anyone who is interested in fishing knows that there is a lot of gossip in this business. So many questions are asked in friendship or social media, and as a nation that loves to answer, we feel the need to explain an event that happens to us as if it were the rule in fishing. This creates a lot of information pollution in the environment, allowing beginners to move in the wrong direction.

First of all, it must be admitted that when going fishing, there can never be a guarantee that the fish will come out in the pasture. The place, which gave a very nice catch 1 hour ago, can go into drought without even a click instantly. Faced with such a situation, the fisherman thinks that the pasture is barren and comments in his own way and does not stop there again. However, the hunting ground selection is correct but the timing is wrong. In addition, you may not comply with the conditions to be followed while fishing. For this reason, it is necessary to know what are the reasons for the sudden disappearance of a fish in a place where fish came out a while ago. According to this;

Fish May Be Scared: Fish should feel safe while feeding. If they are scared for some reason, they immediately leave that environment.

Current Has Changed Direction: Currents generally direct the movement of fish in the water. Fishermen, who know the locations of the currents that have made their way in a certain direction, make fertile hunts in such bearings that they call channels.

Migratory Fish: As is known, most of the fish travel with a school of fish. For this reason, if those who lead the pack enter into a movement, the ones behind follow them, never paying attention to other things.

Attention to Sound and Image: It is very important that the environment remains untouched for fish to come to shore. If you make a lot of noise and give images to the fish, the fish will not approach your bait.

Feed If The Sea Is Calm: Waves in the sea are important in terms of providing natural food for the fish. If the sea is calm in the pasture, it is unlikely that fish will come there. Therefore, if you can make feeding without sound and image, your chances of getting fish will increase.

The reasons we have listed above were made by considering the natural conditions (feed, shelter) necessary for the fish to come to the pasture. Other than that, some regions are really dry and fish can’t find a reason to come to that area. As a result, in order for a fish to exist in a place, conditions must be created that will enable it. If we cannot achieve this as humans, nature steps in and somehow offers natural baits to fish by creating wind, currents, eddies, and leaks. As fishermen, we will be able to make a fruitful hunt by waiting for the fishing line in our hands at that time. At this point, the following question comes to mind; “What should we do to capture such a moment?”.

The answer to this question is actually hidden in what we have told so far. The direction that the wind and currents take in the sea seems to be the key to how we reach the fish. In addition, the eddies created by the waves on the underwater cliffs and the nose and the movements in the areas where the currents collide with the reverse currents will reveal natural baits, so it shows us that we need to find exactly such places. Considering that such pastures are abundant in the seas, we do not have to obey rumors in order to catch fish. We just need to be in the right place at the right time.
